Te Whare Tapa Whā
Introduction of Te Whare Tapa Whā
Te Whare Tapa Whā is a wellbeing model developed by Tā Mason Durie in 1984 to provide a Māori perspective on health.

There are 4 dimensions of the model:
Taha tinana (physical health)
Taha wairua (spiritual health)
Taha whānau (family health)
Taha hinengaro (mental health)
It is the capacity for physical growth and development.
It is the capacity for faith and wider communication.
It is the capacity to belong, to care and to share where individuals are part of wider social systems.
The capacity to communicate, to think and to feel mind and body are inseparable.
I create my wellbeing plan using Tā Mason Durie’s Te Whare Tapa Whā model:
Wall | Activities |
---|---|
Taha tinana (physical health) | Stretching my arms, back, and legs after sitting in front of the computer for every 1-2 hours. Drinking enough water everyday. I also take a massage once a week. |
Taha wairua (spiritual health) | I can spend time practicing mindfulness and continuously remind myself that I have a loving wife and the potential for future success. |
Taha whānau (family health) | I enjoy spending quality time with my wife, engaging in meaningful conversations, and taking walks together in the afternoon, especially when the weather is pleasant. |
Taha hinengaro (mental health) | I can listen to my favorite music to relax, play my Nintendo games within a limited time, and avoid spending too much time on social media. |
Whenua (Interconnections to the land and environment) | Luckily, there is a forest reserve located right beside my living room. I make it a point to spend half an hour each day observing the trees and the birds in this serene environment. |
Conclusion
After learning about Te Whare Tapa Whā and creating my own well-being plan, I now comprehend the significance of taking care of both myself and my family. I have also learned how to integrate the various dimensions of Te Whare Tapa Whā into both my learning in Dev Academy and my daily life.
